ABOUT FRESHWATER PEARLS
The unique ability of the mussel Hyriopsis cumingii to produce dozens of pearls at once makes freshwater pearls more affordable than saltwater pearls. As a result, freshwater pearls are widely used in jewellery and typically range in size from 2 to 9 mm in diameter.
Natural colours of freshwater pearls include white, cream and a variety of pink tones, from soft peach to rich lavender. Grey and black freshwater pearls are achieved through dyeing.
The most common shapes used in jewellery are round, oval, baroque, teardrop and button-shaped pearls. The most valuable freshwater pearls are perfectly round, as this shape is the rarest to form.
